Dave and his wife, Suzanne, lived in western Sonoma County, where they owned and directed a summer camp for children (on a property known as Plantation Ranch).

  Dave died in March 2022 and Suzanne died in May 2024. They had three children.

 Dave graduated from Pomona College and earned a Ph.D from Washington State.
