My parents helped me buy my first car, a white 1967 Chevy Corvair. Stick shift. Not one of the years on Ralph Nader's list (1962-64), but with the rear engine it could still swerve a bit. A lot of fun to drive.

I didn't own a car in high school but car pooled the family sea green Buick once a week. Car poolers included Paly 66ers Beth Nicolai, Lynne Langfelder. I continued my education on the east coast in Rhode Island and in Europe so public transport was readily available. I didn't own a car until ~ 1973, which was a $100.00 Chevy station wagon.

I got an Anglia in 1965. It was white, definitely used, but I don't know what year it was. I also don't remember many details of how I got it. But I had been looking at a mini-van that was $100, so that may have given some indication of the price range and quality of the vehicle. It didn't last too long, mechanically not so sound. But it was fun and here's a picture of it all decked out with green daisies for one of the 'Paly Spirit' events.

When I was a senior, I drove my parents old 1953 Pontiac to school. The first car I ever owned was a 1967 Plymouth Valiant. I had that car for 22 years and 210,000 miles.

It was one of the family cars, a 1950 VW micro van, 55 mph, no faster. I have a memory of going to the beach with 6 passengers and having trouble getting faster than 25 mph on highway 17.

The first car that I bought with my own money was a brand new 1972 Chevrolet Vega hatchback. The price was around $1,999, which, of course, I couldn't afford, so I made payments on it. My mom made it very clear to my brother and me that she wouldn't be buying cars for us, but once I got my first job, teaching 2nd and 3rd graders in East Nicolaus, California, she supplied the downpayment. :-) That car lasted until 1980, when I bought a Honda Acura hatchback.
